History shows that Japan has never been hostile to homosexuality. It was common among the samurais and Buddhist monks. If no law protects the LGBTs from discrimination today, it is more due to the fact that they are very tolerated rather than to the rejection of the community. It is common to come across lesbian, gay, bi and even trans teachers without it being a problem in the Empire of the Rising Sun. Still though, homosexuals admit with much difficulty their tendencies due the social and familial pressures. The focal point of gay culture in Tokyo is in Ni-chome in the Shinjuku area.
