Gay marriage not on the agenda

Although two left-wing political parties obtained a debate on gay marriage in Parliament on October 10, José Socrates, the Socialist Prime Minister rejected any change in the law. He declared the measure was not in his political platform and that a comprehensive debate is necessary. The Socialst party holds the absolute majority in Parliament. Gay Portuguese will therefore have to wait a while for unions to be officialised.
